PEL Associates Awarded US Patent on Smart Coating Systems

Groton, CT- PEL Associates was awarded a broad United States patent (US 7,390,560) “Smart Coating Systems” on technology to release a surface on command. The concept employs specially designed coating arrays which will release a layer via triggers of electrical, acoustic or microwave energy. Applications involve defouling of ships, drug delivery, and electric circuit modification technology. Examples include:

• defouling of ships, cooling systems, equipment or clothing
• removal of bacteria from hospital areas or schools
• removal of toxic agents from military equipment
• drug delivery via stents or other systems
• delivery of fragrances or aerosols
• vehicle interior or exterior alteration or decoration
• paint or ice removal from autos, aircraft or other vehicles
• removal of ice from roads and pathways

In circuit applications, triggered coating release can modify electronic or photonic circuit components creating new and novel communication features. Examples include:

• change in color of an interference filter
• switching of a router or other microelectronic device
• change in features of a membrane, lens, or a lithographic surface

These actions can give rise to new and novel devices. The various opportunities can form the basis of new and potentially successful businesses, and licensing opportunities.
